A would-be double play ball with the bases loaded muffed by the Walsh University infield led to the game-winning run scoring for a 9-8 walk-off win for the University of Minnesota Duluth, picking up its fourth-straight victory and second of the day in Auburndale, Florida on Thursday afternoon.
The game-winning E6 came off the bat of senior first baseman
Alex Wojciechowski, who also socked his eighth home run of the season in game one, a 10-4 victory for UMD (6-4) over Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Wayne State (Neb.) College in non-conference action.
After senior third baseman
Kyle Comer singled home freshman shortstop-turned-outfielder for the day,
Eric Yachinich in the first inning to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead against Walsh (6-7), the Cavaliers touched up sophomore starting pitcher
Nick Dorfman for five runs in third inning courtesy of four extra-base hits. UMD would answer in the fifth, knocking out Walsh starting pitcher Seth Robinson after just 4.1 innings before he could qualify for the win, pulling back within 7-3 (after a rare error by Wojciechowski had led to a pair more crossing the plate. A sacrifice fly in the Cavaliers' sixth distanced them by an 8-3 score before the Bulldog comeback began in earnest in the late innings.
Head coach
Bob Rients went to his bench six times for offensive help, paying off in the eighth inning as freshman third baseman
Tyler Wojciechowski started a rally with a pinch-hit double, and his pinch runner -- junior shortstop
Brian Pierce -- eventually came around to score along with sophomore outfielder
Brett Milazzo on another pinch-hit two-bagger, this time by senior outfielder
Spencer Diedrich. Senior third baseman
Kyle Comer would bring around Diedrich for UMD's third run of the inning on a triple, pulling the Bulldogs within 8-6 headed to the final inning.
Sophomore
Justin Kunkel and freshman
Ryan Cunningham (2-0) each pitched 2.0 scoreless innings: the previous not allowing a hit while striking out one while the latter picked up his second victory of the Florida trip out of the pen as the same players rallied in the bottom of the ninth against Walsh reliever Ryan McSweeney (1-1). Junior catcher
Marco Lucarelli led off the inning with a pinch-hit hit-by-pitch, followed by a walk to junior outfielder
Grant Farley, who had earlier came off the bench as a defensive replacement. An infield single by Pierce followed by a hit-by-pitch against Milazzo finally scored a run. Diedrich added another infield single to tie it up, and Wojciechowski's hard-hit ground ball brought home the winning run and brought out all his teammates from the dugout for a celebration.
UMD 10, Wayne State (Neb.) 4Four errors in the early innings put UMD down 4-0 early against its conference foe Wayne State (3-10), but junior left-hander
Kevin Stocke (1-0) bulldoged his way through 7.0 innings without allowing an earned run, striking out three while scattering three hits and four walks.
Lucarelli doubled home a pair of runs in the fourth to give the Bulldogs some life, and T. Wojciechowski repeated that feat to tie the game in the sixth. A double by Diedrich finally gave UMD a lead, and he and Lucarelli scored on a Wildcat error off the bat of Farley to put the Bulldogs up 7-4. Wojciechowski's eighth long ball of the year sliced through the wind and cashed down the left field line, extending UMD's lead to 10-4 as freshman reliever
Connor Crabtree and junior
Colton Sinning shut the door with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The Bulldogs will close out their Florida trip on Friday afternoon, taking on Wayne State (Mich.) University in a key regional match-up. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. ET at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Florida.
