UMD DOWNS AUGUSTANA BEFORE FALLING SHORT TO SCSU TO CONCLUDE NSIC TOURNEY PLAY

The University of Minnesota Duluth saw its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament run come to an end with a loss to St. Cloud State University, but not before picking up another win against Augustana (S.D.) University in the matinee. SCSU knocked off the Bulldogs twice in tournament action, bringing UMD's season to a close.

UMD 11, AUGIE 8

As has been the norm recently, sophomore third baseman Ben Danielson continued to carry the Bulldog offense, this time in an offensive performance for the ages. Danielson posted a 4-for-5 performance, driving in six RBI, and scoring four runs to lift UMD to an 11-8 win over the second-seeded Vikings. Senior Kyle Hoffman also recorded an impressive showing at the plate, driving in a pair of RBI on two hits while scoring a run.

The scoring started early and often for both teams, with the Bulldogs drawing first blood on a three-run home run by Danielson in the first inning. Augustana quickly responded with five runs of its own in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a two-run home run by senior Kris Ashland to give the Vikings a 5-3 lead.

UMD retook the lead in the following inning, scoring three runs on five hits and one AU error. Hoffman drove in two with a single to left center field and the Bulldogs tacked on another run on a throwing error off of a ground ball to second base from Danielson.

UMD extended its lead to as much as 8-5 by the fourth inning, but Augustana fought back to bring the score to 9-7 heading to the eighth inning. To no surprise of anyone, Danielson came up with his second home run of the game and third of the tournament with a two-run shot to left field, bringing the score to 11-7. The Vikings scored a lone run in the ninth resulting in the third consecutive elimination game win for UMD at 11-8.

SCSU 5, UMD 2

St. Cloud State handed the Bulldogs their only loss of the tournament on Wednesday afternoon and repeated the feat Friday night in St. Cloud, defeating UMD 5-2. After the offensive explosion in its first game of the day, UMD was held to just two runs despite nine hits against the Huskies.

The Bulldogs took the early advantage on a two-RBI double from Danielson, who upped his daily RBI total to eight. Beginning with the third inning, SCSU notched at least one run in three consecutive innings to pull ahead 4-2. The Huskies would add an extra insurance run in the eighth inning to earn a 5-2 win over the Bulldogs.

Danielson went 3-for-4 with two RBI, improving his daily line to 7-for-9, eight RBI, four runs scored, and two home runs. Six other Bulldogs tacked on a hit, including senior catcher Dominic DeFeo who blasted a fourth inning double.

UMD used a by-committee approach on the mound, as freshman Travis Berg started the game and tossed 1.2 scoreless innings before junior Colin Baumgard pitched 3.2 innings with four runs allowed. Freshman Jaylen Hakes and sophomore Jeremy Thorson combined to pitch the final 2.2 innings, surrendering just one run.

The Bulldogs' season comes to an end with a 26-28 record and 18-19 in the NSIC, also winning three games in the NSIC Tournament for the third consecutive year.
