Following a 70-65 upset win over Division I North Dakota State University eight days ago, the University of Minnesota Duluth came away with 73-47 victory over border rival the University of Wisconsin Superior. The Bulldogs took a 4-3 lead on a layup by senior guard
Sammy Kozlowski and UMD never looked back as it led for 38:17.
The Bulldogs dominated throughout much of the game, leading by as much as 30 points with a little over four minutes remaining in the final quarter. UMD won the battle in the paint (38-16), points off turnovers (8-7), second chance points (13-2) and points off the bench (45-20).
The Yellowjackets were bullied all night inside. UWS made 20 of its 64 attempts and had 10 shots swatted away by UMD defenders. Sophomore forward
Sarah Grow stung the Yellowjackets with a solid performance on both sides of the court. The Circle Pines, Minn., native racked up 14 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. Grow's interior partner, freshman
Brooke Olson, amassed 18 points and seven rebounds in the contest. Olson was an efficient 5-for-7 from the field and knocked down seven of her eight free throw attempts.
Continuing the aggressiveness from the defensive side, UMD compiled 24 free throw opportunities, making 17, and gathered 17 offensive rebounds. The Bulldogs finished the match with a hefty 56-32 rebounding advantage.
Hannah Norlin led UWS with 13 points while Eva Reinertson tallied 11 points. Emily Carpenter had a game-high four assists for the Yellowjackets. Kozlowski and freshman guard
Maesyn Thiesen also posted four assists in the winning effort for the Bulldogs.
UMD will have one more tune up game with Bethel University on Saturday afternoon before the regular season starts against Northern Michigan University on the road Nov. 13.
