The University of Minnesota Duluth's road show rolled on, making a two-day stop in Winona, Minn., where the Bulldogs downed Upper Iowa University 7-2 on Saturday afternoon before falling 6-3 to another Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, unbeaten Winona State University the following morning.
Against Upper Iowa, the Bulldogs swept the three doubles matches and then got singles wins from sophomore
Elsa Erickson (No. 3), freshmen
Natalie Cahill (No. 4) and
Isabel Thiner (No. 6) and senior
Katie Baasch (No. 5).
Just as they had done one day earlier in the match with Upper Iowa, senior
Shelby Benkofske and sophomore
Megan Anderson (UMD's 2018 co-captains) prevailed at No. 1 doubles in the setback to Winona State. Benkofske (who suffered her first loss of the year -- regular season or exhibition -- on Saturday), bounced back to win in straight sets at No. 1 singles against the Warriors. Erickson did the same thing at No. 3 singles for the Bulldogs, who are now 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the NSIC.
Through five matches, the Bulldogs have generated a 19-11 singles record, but are a mere 7-8 in doubles competition.
UMD will take on the University of Minnesota Crookston (11 a.m.) and Bemidji State University (1:30 p.m.) in Bemidji, MInn. this Thursday (March 1). Those two NSIC matches were originally scheduled for Feb. 18 but postponed due to winter storms.
