UMD SWEEPS MARY IN WEEKDAY NSIC DOUBLEHEADER

How does one win when they are outhit in both games? Easy. They outscore the other team 15-5 by capitalizing on seven errors and 12 walks.

In its first of five weekday series of the year, the University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team downed University of Mary 10-3 and 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon despite being outhit 10-9 and 7-3.

The Bulldogs (8-10; 4-2 NSIC) have now won seven of their last eight matchups against the Peacocks dating back to 2016. This marked the first back-to-back games in which UMD won both and was outhit in both since April 2016 when it beat Sioux Falls University 5-4 (outhit 10-7) and three days later beat Upper Iowa University 4-0 (outhit 5-4).

In game one, junior shortstop Eric Yachinich tied a career-high four RBI's after a bases-clearing double in the fourth and an RBI triple in the sixth. Senior Jalen Busker (W, 2-2) toed the rubber for 6.0 innings while striking out four.

In the fourth inning of game two, sophomore first baseman Alex Welder launched his second home run of his collegiate career, and first of the season, putting the Bulldogs up 4-0. Welder's home run was also the first hit of the game for UMD; he would finish with two of the team's three hits. The other came off the bat of freshman outfielder Henry George. George has a hit in 13 of the Bulldogs' 18 games. Senior Colin Baumgard (W, 2-0) worked the mound for his collegiate-best 8.0 innings. Baumgard struck out four and walked just one walk while lowering his ERA to 2.12.

After several changes to the schedule due to inclement weather conditions, the series against Upper Iowa University (7-8;5-4 NSIC) has been moved to Mauston, Wis. on Thursday and Friday. First pitch tomorrow (March 29) will come at 4:30 p.m. The Peacocks come into the series after losing both in a doubleheader matchup against the No. 4 Augustana University Vikings.
