The University of Minnesota Duluth continued to roll in the PFX Athletic Spring Games with a doubleheader sweep over Long Island University Post on Monday in Clermont, Fla. The Bulldogs upended the Pioneers 2-0 and 4-3 to extend their winning streak to six games and move to 7-5 on the season.
It didn't take long for the Bulldogs to get on the board in the opener as junior shortstop
Becky Smith scored in the first inning giving UMD all the run support it needed. Smith would later drive in junior center fielder
Hannah Schmoll to cap off the scoring. UMD got another stellar pitching performance from senior southpaw
Sam Hartmann (4-2), who posted her second shutout in as many days and third of the young 2017 season. Hartmann recorded a season-high six punch outs while allowing just five hits.
In the rematch, the Bulldogs spotted LIU Post a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but UMD answered quickly as freshman third baseman
Lauren Oberle belted a two-run homer over the right field fence that brought in junior second baseman
Natalie Wright. UMD would add an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth. The Pioneers knotted things at 3-3 in the top of the fifth, but Wright would score what proved to be the winning run after tripling down the first base line and being driven in by a single off the bat of Smith. Freshman pitcher
Breanna Swint picked up her first collegiate win, going for five innings before being relieved by fellow freshman pitcher
Ashley Taipale. Taipale allowed just two hits in two scoreless innings of work.
The Bulldogs will have Tuesday off before returning to the Diamond on Wednesday against the University of Missouri-St. Louis at 10:30 a.m. and the Holy Family University at 1:00 p.m.
