After moving its games to the College of St. Benedict in Collegeville, Minn., due to inclement weather (i.e. snow and cold), the University of Minnesota Duluth proceeded to sweep its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader with the University of Sioux Falls on Sunday.
Junior shortstop
Becky Smith lifted the Bulldogs to a 2-1 triumph over the Cougars in the opener by connecting on a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh. Junior centerfielder
Hannah Schmoll led off the inning with a double to right center before Smith cleared the left centerfield fence with her sixth homer of the season and gave UMD its fifth walk-off victory this spring.
UMD then shaded the Cougars 5-4 to complete the sweep and move to 33-15 overall and 17-7 in NSIC play with six games remaining on the regular season schedule
In the 2-1 victory, starting sophomore pitcher
Valerie Hohol allowed just one run and five hits before giving way to freshman
Breanna Swint with one out and the bases load in the top of the seven inning. Swint induced a pair of pop-outs to snuff the Cougar rally and move to 5-3 on the year. Smith and Wright each had two of the Bulldogs' eight hits.
In the rematch, a leadoff double from junior second baseman
Natalie Wright sparked what would be a two hit, three-run first inning for UMD. The Cougars would take the lead by racking up four runs -- all unearned -- in the fourth inning. With one on and two outs in the sixth, freshman left fielder
Lauren Greeder knotted things up at 4-4 with a RBI single to center. Wright would follow with a run-scoring single of her own to put UMD up for good. Senior pitcher
Sam Hartmann (12-9) toed the rubber for the Bulldogs, throwing a four-run complete game while lowering her ERA to 1.99. Hartman struck out one and, for the seventh straight appearance, did not allow a walk.
UMD will be back on campus this Wednesday (Apr. 26) to take on NSIC rival Bemidji State University (22-15; 12-10 NSIC) in its final regular season activity of the season.
