(1972-1973)

Patrolled the UMD outfield during the its first two seasons of intercollegiate baseball (and one year while it was a club program) ... left UMD in February 1974 to pursue a professional baseball umpiring career ... spent eight years working in the minors (the Midwest League, the Florida State League, the Florida Instructional League, the Dominican Republic Winter League and the American Association) before receiving his first National League assignment on May 31, 1982 ... became a full-time member of the National League staff in 1983 and since then umpired one World Series (1992), three National League Championship Series (1988, 1991 and 1996), three National League Divisional Series (1995, 1998 and 2009) and two All-Star Games (1987 and 1993) ... completed his 23rd year of Major League umpiring service this past season and worked his 3,000th MLB game on Aug. 30, 2009 ... served as an umpire at the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006 ... officiated small college basketball in Iowa from 1980-91.
