A two-time All-NSIC selection in both 1983 and 1984, Malec capped off a sparkling collegiate career in 1984 by leading all NCAA Division II pitchers in strikeouts per nine innings (12.1). Malec compiled a three-year pitching mark of 12-4 in 20 appearances (109 innings) with a school-record 1.39 earned run average and 124 strikeouts. The Proctor, Minn. native went on to pitch for three years in the Minnesota Twins organization -- 1984-85 with Elizabethton (Rookie) and 1986 with Kenosha
