Lettered three years with the football Bulldogs, including in 1968 when he started on both the offensive and defensive lines, before pursuing a career in professional boxing ... Rolled up 33 wins (21 by knockout) to go with 13 losses and four draws as a pro from 1974 to 1983 ... Boxed no less than 11 current or former world champions: George Foreman, Muhammad Ali (exhibition), Larry Holmes, Leon Spinks, Ken Norton, Frank Bruno, Mike Weaver, Greg Page, Gerrie Coetzee, Mike Tyson (training camp) and Lennox Lewis (training camp) ... Fought for the world heavyweight championship on two occasions -- in 1978 (USBA vs. Mike Weaver) and 1980 (WBC vs. Larry Holmes) ... Captured the Upper Midwest Golden Gloves heavyweight title while he was a sophomore at UMD ... Served on the Minnesota Boxing Commission for 18 years and was appointed commissioner in 2006 ... Also did a stint as a lead ring analyst for ESPN2 Tuesday Night Fights and Friday Night Fights broadcasts ... Is a Crosby, Minn., native.
